Car Theft on the increase – keyless vehicles

I received this recently from the local SNT police recently

Dear Ward Member,

Unfortunately we have had a rise in vehicle thefts over recent weeks in and around the Hornchurch area. The most popular vehicles being stolen are FORD KUGAS, RANGE ROVERS and JAGUARS with a large number of these being “keyless start”. We are finding that owners have not invested in a “faraday bag” , these are key in preventing thefts by means of “electronic transmitters”.

The AVENUE, HORNCHURCH has been targeted a number of times and as such the team have been providing crime prevention advice on our twitter @MPSStAndrews and will be dropping off leaflets over the weekend.

Kind regards,

PC KENNEDY 1131EA and the St Andrews neighbourhood team.

Report crime by calling 101 or in an emergency call 999.
Remember, you can also report crime online on our website: https://www.met.police.uk/

A faraday bag will block the signal from the keys IF the keys (both the main key and the spare) are inside one of these bags – these faraday bags are not expensive.

I do not understand why they are not part of the hand over kit for any new car (like the breakdown triangle or spare wheel/gunk)

this is a useful link – if you have a car with a keyless entry/start – I advise you read this

A bag will cost as little as £5

I stress, you need to put BOTH keys in a single or individual container that will block the signal.

It is also a good idea to test this from time to time by holding the faraday bag close to the car and see if you can unlock the vehicle – if you can, it is time to replace the bag.
