Tax Office scam

I received notification of a scam whereby a resident received a phone call with a recorded message stating that a warrant had been issued against the home owner due to unpaid taxes …….

The scam will go on asking the resident to press a button on the phone to talk to someone from the HMRC tax office.

As with most scams, you can hang up and nothing will happen.

If you do press a button on the phone you will be connected with a scammer who will do their best to get you to give them your credit card details or take your bank details.

If you ever receive a call like this – please hang up.

If you talk to these people ask them to put the issue in writing to you.  This is often enough to get rid of the scammer.

Most scams involve trying to get the person to act quickly under pressure before you get a chance to think. Asking for something to be put in writing is your right.

Requesting something in writing will give you time to think and ask for support before acting.

Please make sure your friends and family are aware of this, especially the elderly who are more likely to be taken in by this.
